Race Report for Mazza Vineyards/ Inferno Racing MTB squad
by Amy Dunkin
The sun is shining the birds are singing and the Little Beaver trails are just waiting to devour the innocent or well at least tubes and wheels one rides in on.
The course consisted of a technical 7.5 mile course that the Experts completed three times and the Sport class completed two times.
With a gravel road to single track start the race began. The trail provided a mixture of off camber single track with roots, double track with roots, and enough rock gardens to build another Stonehenge. Oh yeah and a few log crossing too. Kudos to Gary Moorefield, the race organizer, for working his tail off to make this course more enjoyable for racing. Gary did a great job improving the course and luckily the weather co-operated pretty well for race day too. Just slick enough for some wet mud to make its way onto the rock gardens as all the racers made their way through. The weather provided plenty of heat too. Thanks so much to the volunteers for handing out the water. Very much appreciated.
After the race a great feast awaited the hungry souls with lots for everyone.
The Mazza / Inferno WV MTB squad had our own Josh Cook placing 3rd in the High School class. Good job Josh.
I, Amy Dunkin made my first MTB race of the season having recovered physically and somewhat financially from a road wreck in early March. It was great to see everyone again. I felt great on the road climb and was right in the mix but the off camber rocky ST kept throwing me off and my fear for falling on my left hip that is still sore from my road wreck kept me from being as aggressive as I should be on the technical stuff. Then near the end of the first lap my left calve started cramping and about another mile into the second lap I was power pedaling over a small rooty hill and both calves cramped so I had to dismount and stretch for a few minutes. So after that I just kept moving and paced out to the finish. Just not my day or favorite race course style but at least I feel good to be back out there.

Bruce Miller was not feeling on top of his game today and also finding out he had chosen a poor tire selection for the course he rolled in at 10th place. Still coming in before half of his Sport class. Bruce’s positive note for the day was that the post race meal was great.
