HSSC MTB RACE PRESS RELEASE:
Fast and furious was the name of the game today. Hot temps, muggy conditions, and dry conditions prompted everyone to gear up and lay the rubber down to get done fast and cool off.
The course consisted of a technical 7+ mile course that the Experts completed three times and the Sport class completed two times.
With an asphalt road to grass hill climb start the race was on. After climbing it was time to shift into big ring for some fast relatively level double track that lead you into a rollercoaster ride of sweet single track. Of course the ever present roots and rocks were available for all to enjoy. A few log crossings here and there and folks you have a true WV MTB race. There was some double track climbing and lots of fast single track all along the way. A very “cool” sprinkler system was set up for all lap riders to pass through and a very helpful volunteer was passing cool water for interior or exterior cooling of the rider.
After the race all riders were greeted with pizza, powerade, and fruit. Lots to go around. Then a great prize table was presented for the top three in each class to enjoy. Pro/Experts received undisclosed cash awards.
The HSSC WV MTB squad performed well to take home some podium finishes once again.

I, Amy Dunkin raced in the Women’s Sport class and got my first 1st place finish for 2005. As much as I did not want to race today I actually raced one of my best races all year. I just got zoned in and loved the course. Luckily not too much hiking to do. Pulled calf muscle is still tender and hiking reminds me of it. Luckily I was using Crank Brothers Egg Beater pedals and KENDA Karma tires to keep me clipped and and rolling fast all day

Lori Ware also racing in the Women’s Sport class rock and rolled on this course too, claiming 2nd place. Even after a crazy day Saturday at her friends wedding. With her KENDA Nevegal tires she was able to keep traction on the off champer singletrack, sandy downhills, and creek crossing.

Steve Thaxton went out hard but somewhere along the way he just hit the wall. Or in his own words, "...just overlived and under nourished." Finishing on top all of the time can take its toll and Steve had to call it quits for the day to recover and refuel and come out blazing next weekend.
