Tour De Lake - WVMBA Spring Series #6
Charles Fork Lake– Spencer, WV
05-23-2005
TEAM NOTE: First I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our team managers and founders Tim and Karen Edwards. They brought their first daughter Kate into the world on May 19th. Congratulations to the Edwards from the WV HSSC MTB squad.
HSSC MTB RACE PRESS RELEASE: Back again. The Tour De Lake has arrived. What to expect? Extreme heat, lots of rain, not this time. The MTB racers that came out for the #6 race in the WVMBA Spring Series were greeted with a little heat at the begining which soon turned into decent temps a cool breeze and a overcast day. The rain held off until most of the riders were off the course
The course was classic TDL, roots, rocks, and too many log crossings. The course is a 10 mile first lap and then a 9 mile second lap. Starting on flat asphalt that quickly leads you up one steep paved climb to the top of the dam and then fireroad to the woods. Now time for the mud, roots, rocks, and logs. I think they forgot to weed eat around the trails. Pretty overgrown for a race course. I had to help a young rider who wrecked and landed in a pile of weeds. If he had not had been yelling help I may not have seen him. Lots of cool water provided on the course by some helpful youngsters. Blimpie sandwiches for all racers and some cool prizes.
The HSSC WV MTB squad once again provided podium finishes.
Steve Thaxton racing in the Vet Expert class kept consistent with his fast lap times to bring in a 3rd place finish in his class with a time of 1:54:38.

Jon McClung racing Sport (19-34) is moving into pounce position for first. Jon came away with a great 2nd place finish in a class of 28 competitors with a time of 2:12:34.

I, Amy Dunkin was able to claim 3rd place in my class with a time of 3:03:26. I just could not get into a good rhythm for the majority of the first lap. Then with a slow start I finally pulled myself back into a good race flow by the end of the first lap and carried through picking up steam for the second lap.
Lori Ware our other Sport Women class rider could not find her groove either on that first lap. Lori got 4th in her class with a time of 3:05:54.

Rich was unable to make it. He was taking care of his beautiful 13 month old baby girl and also helping his mom out. She took a tumble when her parking brake gave out while she was stepping out of her car. We all hope she is doing better.
