Conte’s City Center Criterium

Cobblestone / Nature’s Path’s new pro program paid off as it put two riders on the podium of a very fast Conte’s City Center Criterium last Sunday, May 15 in Newport News, Va. Ward Solar sprinted to the front of the field to win the event.

Team Cobblestone described the race through its web site, “Throughout the race small clusters of riders would scoot off the front with one of the boys always in attendance.  With three laps to go, Snow Valley Pro Cycling sprinter Cam Holland has team-mate and strong man Paul Ward positioned on the front to set up for the “big dance.”

Cobblestone’s Craig Dodson slipped past Holland to place second.

Category 3 rider, also from Cobblestone, Chip Gobles peeked out of his pro team-mates’ shadow to place seventh.  Earlier in the Category 3 race he sprinted for sixth.

Richmond Ciclismo’s Matt Forbes said the team tried to go with every break during the race. 

“I tried move up and attack one time and it was just impossible,” Forbes said. “We were going about 35 (mph).”

“We rode well for the most part on Sunday,” said Ciclismo’s Andrew Olson. “But alas, the pancake flat, four corner, four lane course was not so good for a breakaway.  In the end, we were trying to set up Tim (Mullins) for the sprint, but he ended up on the front bringing back a small group on the last lap.

Olson and Forbes placed 12th and 13th respectively.

Ciclismo’s Jon Gaudio placed fourth in the Category 3 race that he described as a typical.

“Teams attacked but nothing stayed more than a few hundred yards off the front.  Sean (Yeager of Ciclismo) tried some moves and put his nose out in the wind a few times,” Gaudio said. “I more or less kept an eye on things and followed wheels as not to waste too much energy.”

Of the pre-registered entries in the category 4 race, one in five was a member of Richmond Ciclismo.  More cyclists registered but the cat 4 peloton was still a blur of yellow jerseys.

Ciclismo’s Matt Kleiman sprinted for the win followed by team-mate Tony Hall.  Hall raced the day before in Poolesville, MD where he also took second.

“It was easy to see the Ciclismo guys lining up at the end of the race,” said Monticello Velo’s Ryan Elliot. “I hopped on the back of that train for a top ten finish.” Elliot placed eighth just in front of Ciclismo’s Mark Saunders, Jr.

 “Every time I looked up, I would see Stratton (Delany), Rick (Barlow), Dave (Anderson) Matt (Marchal), Tony (Hall) Chuck (Rushby), Mark (Saunders), Bob (Haufler), Scott (Sheble) Tom (Houff) or Tink (Steed) attacking or controlling the front,” said Kleiman as he counted off the members using fingers to help ensure that he would remember them all. “And so to have a lead-out train of four guys for the last one and half laps was fantastic.”

“Sunday was my first win since 1988,” Kleiman said.

Not all went well for Ciclismo on Sunday.  Dave Anderson broke his wrist in a mid-pack crash with six laps to go. Anderson was on the verge of upgrading with wins at the Dismal Dash, Jefferson Cup and last week’s Wintergreen Climb where he joined the sub-40 minute club.

Category 5 rider Roderick Moore, of Ciclismo, placed fourth in his first race ever.

A flat course isn’t always bad, said Ciclismo’s Ann Hardy.

“It sure was nice to be in Tidewater after Wintergreen and Waynesboro,” Hardy said.  “It was also different riding with only the cat 4s for a change. All of us are so used to trying to stay with the cat 1, 2, and 3’s that no one really knows how to lead.”

The few breaks in the women’s race were quickly chased down.  Ciclismo’s Sally Snead and Hardy respectively placed fifth and sixth.

In the age group 30/40 race Three Sports’ Dan King sprinted for the win while older brother, of Charlottesville Racing Club, Mark King took second.

“On this course, everyone had a chance to win or have a high finish,” said Three Sports’ Mark Connelly.  “In other words, the course covered up a lot of the riders’ short comings by being so flat and long.”

After the race Dan King said his team and his brother’s team did work together to even the odds with the larger teams.

The King family reunion in Newport News included the son of Mark King, Ben, winning the junior event.  Spectators talked in awe of junior winning last week’s Wintergreen Climb.  He came within a minute of the record set by a pro rider.  Ryan Elliot of Monticello Velo placed third. Ciclismo’s Mark Saunders Jr. placed fourth. Cobblestone’s Scott Riley placed fifth.

Dennis Rainear of Team CSK/ Central Virginia Cycling Club took fourth in the age group 50+ race.

Eleven-year-old Zoe Haufler won the junior girls event.  Don’t misunderstand any talk of Zoe being sick of cycling.  She said she only got an upset stomach during this race.

Tuesday night, the Bryan Park Cycling Training Series kicked off its 2005 season.

Chip Goble of Cobblestone beat Jon Wirsing of Snow Valley. Ciclismo’s Jon Gaudio and John Schindler respectively placed third and fourth and Matt Carlton of Lynchburg College placed fifth.
