Race Report for Mazza Vineyards/ Inferno Racing MTB squad

by Amy Dunkin

Warm weather held on until the race was well over. Thank goodness.

A fast dry course was ready for all to enjoy this race day.

Sport class racers completed one 13 mile lap while the Experts completed two 13 mile laps.

At 11am a staggered mass start along the gravel road got things rolling into some overgrown double track. Oh yeah, watch out for the yellow jackets. The little suckers pack a punch and I got bit about two miles in on my ankle. Right where the shoe touches the top of the ankle while pedaling. Oh well, par for the course in the wonderful of MTB racing. The rest of the course was a mixture of fast and rocky single track and then some fire roads with climbs. Like I said nice and dry with just a tad of water on one climb to help with traction. Oh yeah there were some rocks on the fast stuff and that made for many flat tires this race. On one stretch of road it looked like pit row.

After the race an amazing post race meal of Burritos awaited the hungry crew.

My day was not very exciting as I had no competitors in my class. Really unusual as the Sport Vet. women class has usually been a good turnout at the past races. So I just enjoyed the trails and the scenery. Pulled over a couple of times to let riders pass and encourage them along the way. Stopped once to drink my energy drink and then about 7 miles in I started to get a little hot so I thought I better turn it on and get this thing done. I passed a number of the Sport women riders in the last 6 miles and then on the final half mile I passed the Sport rider Sue Vick. I must have motivated her because she powered by at the top of the final climb. Way to go girl power.

Bruce Miller- Sport (18-34) was ready to lay it down today but a over eager beginner racer got in front of him and then stopped suddenly on the technical section of trail which then caused Bruce to wreck on the kids wheel. With that loss of momentum so close to the start Bruce got passed by his competitors and had to make up time and valiantly pulled off a 4th place finish for the day.

Josh Cook – High School (15-18) - was just zoned in today. Plus a pre-race bet with Steve Thaxton helped make this youngster lay the rubber down today. Josh was able to capture his first 1st place finish of the season.

Mazza / Inferno results for thecae New River Bike Fest WVMBA Points Series Race #10:

Josh Cook – 1st place High School (15-18)
Bruce Miller – 4th place Sport Men (19-34)
Amy Dunkin - 1st place Sport Vet. Women (34-45)
